Accessibility standard

Section 508

Federal agencies and their vendors must meet accessibility requirements.

Applies to: Government and contractors

What it is

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act requires federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology accessible.

The refreshed standard incorporates WCAG 2.0 AA by reference, with current procurement increasingly expecting 2.1 or 2.2 AA.

Who must comply

  • U.S. federal agencies
  • Contractors and vendors selling tech to the federal government
  • Any product purchased with federal dollars

Key requirements

  • Conformance to WCAG AA
  • Accessible documentation and support materials
  • VPAT and Accessibility Conformance Reports for procurement
  • Accessible authoring tools and platforms
Risks of non-compliance

Lost contracts, removal from approved vendor lists, and contract clawbacks.
